Spain is a vital member of the EU, with significant influence on its policies and a long tradition of influence in the Mediterranean region. It is one of the largest economies in the Eurozone and participates in peacekeeping missions in the Middle East. 

Bilateral relations between Spain and Israel are strong. In recent years, high-ranking Spanish figures such as former Prime Minister José María Aznar have called for a stronger Europe-Israel relationship. To this end, Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs established Casa Sefarad-Israel – an organization devoted to fighting anti-Semitism, fostering better understanding of Jewish and Sephardic culture, and promoting relations between Spain and Israel. Recently, the Spanish government passed a law allowing Spanish descendants of Jewish origin to apply for citizenship. These efforts represent strong ties between the two countries.

Bilateral trade volume between Israel and Spain totalled about $2.2 billion in 2017. Both countries share a strong interest in enhancing trade relations and encouraging businesses and investors to invest in both economies.

ELNET’s continuous efforts in Spain have contributed to the growing relationships. While ELNET has yet to open an office in Spain, our programs include a broad political spectrum of Spanish decision-makers. In recent years, more than 100 senior political figures from Spain participated in delegations to Israel.
